Target to reduce small particle pollution strengthened

Defra are increasing the ambition of the interim targets for PM2.5 concentrations so that they align more closely with the recent trajectory towards the statutory targets.

Defra have announced revised interim targets for fine particulate matter concentrations that apply to England air quality monitoring.

The World Health Organisation estimates that 7 million deaths can be attributed to air pollution each year. Particulate matter pollution can affect the health of your heart, brain and lungs. Taking measures to reduce the amount of 'sooty' air we breathe will benefit everyone, but particularly the young, old and vulnerable.
